In select books, short definitions of challenging words appear just above those difficult words. There's also the "Word Wise" feature that may appeal to younger readers or people learning English as a second language. The "Time to Read" feature lets you know if you'll have the stamina to finish a chapter or the entire book.

I reckoned Amazon would instead bring the feature to its top-of-the-line Kindle Voyage that starts at $199 for a Wi-Fi-only model and is the finest dedicated eReader I've used. I'm mildly surprised that Amazon first brought Bookerly to the Paperwhite, which starts at $119 for a Wi-Fi-only model with so-called "special offers," or $139 without such ads. And reading on Paperwhite indeed provides a gratifying alternative to print. Still, give Amazon credit for not resting on its laurels. Besides, I haven't exactly heard a loud outcry of complaint about the previous Paperwhite, which, as it happens, is Amazon's top-selling Kindle. For me, it's all about the book I'm immersed in, after all. It's difficult to verify that assertion after only a few days with the new Paperwhite, but I'm not a persnickety reader who would necessarily get lost in such minutia. The result, Amazon claims, is that you'll read faster and with less eye strain.
